Blogging and Search Engine Optimisation

A blog is a vital online marketing tool for any business. You can use this section on your website to feature or discuss the different products or services you offer. You can also use the blog to write or talk about the on-goings in your company, or feature trends and updates in the industry.

Having a blog for your business will help establish your expertise and give it integrity and credibility.

But as there are millions of websites posting blogs and publishing contents everyday, you have to use certain blogging methods to optimise your content. The experts call this SEO or Search Engine Optimisation. Making use of this method will result in your website being properly ranked and indexed on search engines like Google. When your site is ranked well, anytime an internet user searches for products or services related to what you offer, your blog or website may appear in the search results potentially giving your business the upper hand over your competition.

Getting ranked and indexed, however, takes time and effort, as search engine algorithms change regularly. To get a good ranking you do have to step up to the challenge. Google, for the most part, have changed their algorithms relentlessly in recent months.

So, how do you use your blog and let SEO methods deliver great results? Following are three tips:

1)   BE ORIGINAL

Search engines love fresh and original content. The more of these you publish — via articles, blog discussions, podcasts and videos — the better your site will rank. Original content with high quality and relevant information is what will set you apart from other websites or blogs.

2)   BLOG REGULARLY

When your blog is updated often, your site will get indexed often as well. This leads to more traffic on your site, which can potentially be converted to business opportunities.

3)   USE KEYWORDS EFFECTIVELY

Provide content that is geared towards your target market. Thus, you have to become familiar with who your audience is and what they’re looking for on the internet. When you write your blog articles, use keywords your target market will most likely also use in searching online content.

However, be mindful of using this to the minimum and instead keep the flow of the blog comprehensive and informative while avoiding overstuffing with unnecessary keywords. Search engines penalise websites that overuse keywords because the articles are usually without substance, do not read well and the information not the best available.

4)   LINK UP

Sometimes, to substantiate your blog’s content, linking to external article from authoritative sites will give it more weight and credibility. Just as repeating keywords can be detrimental, so too can stuffing your blog with links. It is important to link but don’t over do it. Limit the number of sites you link to in a blog post to between one to three authority links only.

5)   OFFER VARIETY

Blog content isn’t only about posting articles. You can also use podcasts, videos and or slide shows, as these are also being ranked on search engine sites. Many users, in fact, prefer audio-visual content over written content, so consider adding this to your content mix.

It would also help to accommodate guest blogs or offer to do one on a different site, to drive traffic to yours. Guest blogging will help widen your target market, as well as provide a different voice or perspective on your blog so that it remains interesting.

6)   KEEP SOCIAL MEDIA IN MIND

SEO has recently adapted social media use into its structure, so that if you constantly come up with “share worthy” content on your blog, people will be encouraged to post a link to it on their social media profiles. Search engines recognize the potential of a social media link to go viral.

When it comes to blogging and SEO, the bottomline is this:

Focus on quality content that your audience will find interesting. Worry less about getting ranked and indexed. When you channel your efforts into coming up with good content regularly, search engines will pick up on this and recognise your site as an authority. Even if they roll out new changes to their algorithms, as long as you have high quality content on your blog, you website will get its deserved ranking with the search engines.
