When it comes to social media, knowing who your industry’s leading influencers are is one of the keys to success. After all, these are the people who inevitably have their fingers on the pulse, have a bountiful amount of followers and when they talk people sit up and take note.

In a nutshell, influencers are the people in your industry that you want to get on your side. Even if you can get just one of your posts reshared by an influencer the potential reach is massive and almost exponential.

But how can you even begin to engage an influencer? Surely they must be bombarded by requests, updates and messages every single day.

The answer, unfortunately, is that there’s no definitive way but there are a few steps you can take to improve your chances.

First, get to know your influencer by following their various accounts. Look at the posts they produce, share, like and comment on. This will give you an idea as to the type of content that resonates with them.

Once you have established what kind of stuff they are interested in you can start making yourself known. Share their posts and add value to the discussions with respectful, useful comments. You want them to begin to recognise your name and associate it with favourable thoughts.

It’s then simply a case of producing that killer content we always talk about. You know, the stuff that engages, strikes a chord and resonates with your audience. If an influencer thinks your posts are useful then there’s a strong chance that they’ll share them with their followers.

This is when you will see the results of all your hard work. The potential reach you can achieve through an influencer should not be underestimated. A little groundwork can pay dividends in the end.

By engaging just one influencer you are also engaging their hundreds or thousands of followers at the same time.
